Daughter of the Blood - Anne Bishop This was just...bizarre. Yes, it's dark and many people may find its themes disturbing and repulsive, but that wasn't the problem for me. I take all fantasy literature with a grain of salt and can deal with reading about some really bad things, but hey, at least give me a good story to go on.

I did like the author's dark and somber writing style, but try as I might, I couldn't get into the book. Good bits were scattered here and there throughout the novel, but mostly I struggled to but failed to care about any of the characters. When they weren't over-exaggerated they were bland, and on the whole just weren't that interesting. And I always felt that good fantasy writers build their worlds through their writing, as opposed to just throwing out convoluted lists and charts about jewels and rankings at the beginning of the book before the story even begins.
