The Way of Shadows - Brent Weeks Better than I expected. When the book started and I was immediately introduced to its young protagonist, I thought with dismay this was going to be yet another series about a smart alecky impudent kid. The Black Prism, which is another book I've read by Brent Weeks left a bad taste in my mouth because of that, giving an otherwise mature fantasy story a juvenile feel. I was happy to see after a few chapters that this wasn't the case with this book.

It's a very dark tale, even as assassin fantasy novels go, with lots of twists and turns and surprises. There's a main story, but as there are also many other plot threads left hanging for the next installment, I don't think I can fairly judge this book by itself; it feels like it's one of those trilogies I have to complete before I comment on it as a whole. I enjoyed this first book, nonetheless, with exactly the type of grittiness I needed.
